Townsend health board debates reclaiming burial duties from town clerk. Chair Dr. Christian Roman-Ramirez raised the idea of centralizing burial-agent responsibilities with the Board of Health rather than the town clerk, but Clerk Todd Arsenault pushed back, asking, "My big question is why?" Nashoba Sanitarian Rick Metcalf noted neighboring towns including Groton, Pepperell and Harvard all delegate the duty to their clerks, and cited staff training gaps on the state's vital records database.
No vote was taken; the board will revisit the issue Sept. 22. Separately, the board approved local upgrade approvals for septic systems at 78 Clement Road and 98 Wallace Hill Road, approved a $73,995.62 fiscal 2027 warrant, and heard Waste Zero representative Mark Dancy pledge additional quality checks after residents complained about torn purple pay-as-you-throw bags, saying "residents are being asked to buy these, they're being asked to pay a premium."
