Townsend Conservation Commission fails quorum threshold, delays Squannacook Rail Trail compliance certificate. The commission, meeting January 14, could not vote on the long-pending certificate of compliance for the Squannacook Rail Trail (DEP file 308-0669) after Conservation Agent Colby Streeter noted that three members present constituted only 50 percent of the six officially seated members — not a majority. Joan Watkowitz of Squannacook Greenways presented a detailed project history spanning a 2019 notice of intent, multiple DEP extensions, endangered species monitoring, and 2024 bridge deck repairs on two historic trestle bridges.

The hearing was continued to January 28. In other action, the commission voted 4-0 to recommend Commissioner Sandra Lord as its representative to the town's newly forming Community Preservation Committee, and approved $330 in Massachusetts Association of Conservation Commissions dues for fiscal year 2027. Streeter also flagged a potential unpermitted tree-removal violation at 72 and 80 Main Street, both owned by the Townsend Historical Society, for placement on the next agenda.
